Who?
This study group is intended for educators who already have/ will soon received /receive their administrative license, and who intend to apply in 2006 for the
principalship or other administrative positions leading to the principalship. Past participants have included teachers, instructional coaches, Deans, Assistant Principals, and private & charter school administrators.
Purpose:
The role of the principal has undergone significant change in recent years. This study group will explore the professional move into the principalship and provide support for educational leaders
as they apply for and engage in their search for administrative positions. Participants will learn from each other as well as from experienced leaders while deepening their understandings and building a network of relationships with other leaders.
Discussion topics will remain flexible depending on the needs of participants, but plans are to include many of the following topics and activities:
- Getting to Know the Various Districts
- Resume Writing with Professional Feedback
- Mock Interview Practice with Feedback
- District Level Interviewing
- School-Site Interviewing
- Understanding the Community
- Finding Your Match
- Defining & Communicating Your Vision
- Concrete Steps: Selection Processes Districts Use
- Identifying Your Strengths and Growing with Your Weaknesses
- Your Disposition/Attitude
- Strengthening Your Leadership Resume
- Narrative Responses on Applications
- Building a Relationship Network to Draw Upon
- Face Time With District Leaders
- The Knowledge You Need Before You Walk Into the Interview

This study group will be facilitated by Jim Brickey and Veronica Benavidez. Jim Brickey is currently serving as the interim principal at Mark Twain in
Littleton
. He was a former Director of Elementary Schools, Elementary Principal and Teacher at the Douglas County Schools. Veronica Benavidez has been a director of Human Resources and is currently the Principal at
Remington
Elementary School
in Denver Public Schools. Both have worked in recruitment and hiring of administrative positions for several years in
Boulder
,
Commerce City
, Cherry Creek,
Denver
,
Douglas
County
; and have many years of experience as principals.
Various board members from the Colorado Principals’ Center will also assist with this study group and successful leaders from school districts around the metro area will be invited to participate in single sessions.
- Cost: $245 – CPC Member Districts
$285 – Non CPC Affiliated Districts
- One hour of graduate credit from CU-Denver will be available for participants. A light continental breakfast will be provided each morning.
