History
“If we can provide opportunities for school leaders to reflect thoughtfully on the work they do, to clarify their thinking through spoken and written word, and to engage in conversation with others about their work, they will better understand their complex schools and the tasks confronting them. Understanding practice, we believe, is the central most important condition for improving schools.”
Inspired by these words from Roland Barth, founder of the Harvard Principal Center, the Colorado Principals’ Center was formed in 1985 in an effort spearheaded by two principals who had attended a summer institute at Harvard the previous summer.
As the Colorado Principals’ Center begins its 24th year of operation, our organization is significantly expanding opportunities for principals, assistant principals, other school leaders as well as aspiring school leaders.
Board of Directors
Each participating school district and organization selects 1-3 principals or other school leaders to serve on the CPC Board of Directors. The Board may appoint ex-officio members who are most often former principals. The Board’s chairperson is elected by the group from the group of current board members. For the 2009-10 SY two principals will serve as co-chairs: Darci Mickle (Cherry Creek School District) and Suzanne Morris-Scherer (Aurora Public Schools).
The Board has three main purposes: 1) Establish policies & procedures, 2) Identify & select program topics and resources, and 3) Serve as a communication link with their individual school districts or organizations. It meets 5-7 times a year on the first Tuesday morning of the month. Any school leader is always welcome to attend Board meetings: See Meeting Schedules for specific dates, times and locations.
Advisory Council
Newly created this year, members of this group include former CPC Board members, the current Board chair(s), and CPC executive director. The group meets once or twice a year, and serves two purposes: 1) Advise CPC Executive Director and Board Chair(s) on programmatic and operational issues, and 2) Provide additional communication link with school districts & educational organizations.
